What is a spiritual breakthrough? A breakthrough is removing spiritual obstacles to your spiritual walk with God. This is a term used by many Christian believers.
When someone says, ‘I need a breakthrough,” They are usually experiencing a time when they feel like heaven is closed and God is not moving on their behalf. It can also refer to a place of coldness, staleness, or burden. It is a season of dryness of the soul and spirit that can cause discouragement if we are not careful.
As a believer, there will be times in your walk when you feel God is not near, nor is He hearing your prayers. This is why it is so important to remember God’s word reminding us, to walk by faith and not by sight. The word is a lamp and a light that promises to lead us out of every dark situation! Don’t believe your Feelings.
Emotionally, we know that the Father will never leave or forsake us; but when the heavens seem to be closed to us, there can be a temptation to feel discouraged. This is the time to resist the lies of the enemy, snuggle up to God and continue to press forward. The Word of God must be our foundation rather than our feelings. Feelings are constantly changing and can be manipulated by the Devil.
Don’t Listen to the Enemy
The Devil is the Accuser of your Faith, whispering in our ears, He never answers your prayers. He doesn’t care about you. He won’t heal you. He always blesses Sharon. God doesn’t love you…Sound familiar? This is the Devil, trying to corrode our faith and turn us away from the God of our Salvation.
If he can make us fearful or make us believe his lies, he can cause us to question God and weaken our faith. I heard fear described this way: “False Evidence Appearing Real.” So, stand on the Word of God, and command the enemy to shut his mouth.
What God Has to Say
- 1Co 10:13 (KJV) – There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
- 1 Samuel 12:22 (KJV) – For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people.
- Deuteronomy 7:8 (KJV) – But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

Fasting to a Breakthrough
When you have tried everything and nothing else has worked, consider fasting! Fasting can help you get the breakthrough you seek. Remember, we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but the enemies of your faith don’t want you to walk in peace and joy.
Isaiah 58:6 talks about the fact that God has chosen. One of the things that a fast can accomplish is, “to lose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke!” (KJV) So you can see what amazing challenges can be moved with fasting.
You don’t have to go on a long, extended fast to get results. Try eliminating one or two meals a day and set aside that time to pray and seek the Lord. I will be talking about fasting in a later post.
Praise your Way to a Spiritual Breakthrough
There is something about praise that causes gray clouds to turn blue and closed heavens to open! If you have not been praising God lately, it’s time to put on your dancing shoes. He has given us the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness! Use your praise as a weapon against the enemy.
It feels great and causes the enemy to run! The enemy doesn’t want to hear you give God glory, honor, and praise. He wants to hear us murmur and complain and blame God! Praise is the language of gratitude.
Praise says, I trust you, Lord. I appreciate everything you have done and will do for me! Praise lifts us to heavenly places and into God’s presence! So the next time you need a spiritual breakthrough, praise the Lord with everything you’ve got!
- Psalms 27:6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above my enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.
- Psalms 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.
- Psalms 40:30 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
Valley Experiences
We would all love to live on the mountaintop. Aren’t these amazing experiences? The truth is, we can not live on the mountaintop. If we did, we would never grow up. As we mature, we come to a realization that God is with us, whether we feel Him or not, and where we are in the valley or the mountain. We are not proven on the mountain but in our valley experiences.
Valley experiences do not necessarily mean we have done anything wrong. Even Jesus had wilderness and desert experiences, and he was the son of God! Here we will find out what we are made of! When you are going through this, ask God to show you what it is he wants you to learn.
Ask him to show you your faults, shortcomings, and your sins. The sooner we learn our lessons, the quicker we will get out of the valley. As we mature, we will begin to recognize that the valley can be where we get closer to the Lord!
