Something powerful happens when you pray! Prayer is one of the most important things you will do as a believer. It is the time when you connect with God, to feed your spirit and set your heart and mind for the day. Let’s be honest, it can sometimes be a challenge just to start praying, let alone do it every day. The kids will call you, the phone will ring, your mind will wander. It will take discipline and determination to make it your daily thing. However, when you have mastered praying you will be taken to a new place in God, every day!
Prayer – Resisting the Devil
I heard a preacher say, the most frightening thing to the Devil, is a Christian who knows how to pray. When we pray, we entering into the realm of the Spirit, where God is, we will hear His voice, and get His direction and power! So realized when you have difficulty praying, you have to resist the Devil at any cost! The key is to stay focused enough to reach your goal. Like anything else, if you can manage to set aside time to pray every day for 30 days or so, it will become a habit that you will not want to break!
When I was a young Christian, it was the hardest thing for me to still my mind enough to get anything accomplished when I prayed. It also didn’t help that I am ADD. As I prayed I would remember my plants needed water, or I would notice a little dust somewhere. I could not resist the distractions until I learned I had power over my mind and other things that would take me away from prayer.
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7 KJV The word ‘resist’ is a verb, that means to resist something we need to take action. We have to oppose the temptation to stop praying. Submit yourselves to God and his purpose and tell the enemy, you won’t stop me from seeking God.
If you are filled with the Holy Spirit, praying in tongues is one of the most powerful ways of quieting the mind. If you are not filled with the Holy Spirit go HERE to find the prayer to receive the Holy Ghost. Another excellent way to quite the mind is worship. Sing your favorite song, worship and praise the Father. You will sense him drawing near and distractions melting away.
When doing Your Devotions
Devotions are the time you set aside to spend with God. It is a time of prayer and meditation. Some people get up early to do their devotions first thing in the morning. Some people are not morning people and will set aside time some other time in the day to seek God. So don’t feel if you don’t get up at 6 AM, but make sure to spend time with God regularly.
So don’t feel if you don’t get up at 6 AM, but make sure to spend time with God regularly. When spending time with God, quality is more important than quantity. Mark 1:37 And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.
Designate a time for your daily devotions
Everyone is not a morning person, so do not feel condemned if you can’t get up at 4:00 or 5:0 AM to pray. I am not a morning person, so I set aside a time when I know I can devote time to prayer. The main thing to pray and spend with the Lord. Do not be religious about what time you pray, just pray! If you are rusty and have not had devotions for a while. Make a commitment of ten to fifteen minutes at first and increase your time gradually.
Shut Down Electronics
Turn off the TV, shut down the computer turn off the phone and take your time with the Lord. Psalms 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. Have a quiet place to pray. Distraction is the greatest enemy of your daily devotions, so pick a time and place where you know you will not be disturbed. Let your family know that you will not be available for the next half hour or so, and do not disturb you.
Make your pray room your own
It is not necessary, but nice to have your bible devotions in a place prepared just for that. Decorate your prayer place with flowers, candles, floor pillows, anything that will create an atmosphere of peace and harmony.
Put your foot down
If you find that you have been distracted for several days, and have not done your daily devotion, don’t feel condemned; but put your foot down and decide, that you are not going to do anything until you pray.
God will often lead us to do something, but He will not always tell us how to go about doing it. Learn how to walk through the doors God opens for us!
