What is the gift of prophecy? Can anyone prophesy? Do you have to be ordained to give a prophetic word? If you are a Christian and believe only certain people can be used in the gift of prophecy, you are mistaken.
This spiritual gift is one of the most important to the Body of Christ. God uses prophecy to teach, encourage and correct the body of Christ. The term “spiritual gift“, comes from the Greek “charismata” also called “Charisma”, meaning, a “gift of grace”.
Though a believer may be used or said to have the “gift of prophecy,” he is not the possessor of the gift. They are only the vessel through which the gift flows. I Corinthians 12:7.
The prerequisite to being used in the gift of prophecy is to be born again and baptized in the Holy Spirit. Prophecy is one of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives gifts to God’s people as He wills. Ephesians 4:7, 8.
What is the Purpose of the Gift of Prophecy?
1. The gift of prophecy is used for edification encouragement and comfort.
It is purpose is to minister hope and correction to the Body of Christ. Being used in the gift of the spirit is different than standing in the office of the Prophet.
Do only spiritual people prophesy? Christians who are used by God to prophesy, are not necessarily, very spiritual, but those who are willing to yield to the Spirit of God. I have seen baby Christians used to prophesy.
I have seen young children and teens used to prophesy. So, you see God does not show favoritism. He will use anyone who is obedient to His voice and willing to be used. Don’t be intimidated by Christians you perceive to be spiritual giants. Open your mouth, and He will fill it!
1 Corinthians 14:3 NIV – But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.
How is Prophecy Confirmed?
2. Prophecy must be confirmed by God’s Word
God will never give you a prophetic word that does not line up with God’s Word. It will always agree with His, mind, nature and character! This is also true for personal prophecy. If someone comes to you with a prophetic word that, you are going to marry ‘so and so’, and they are is already married, understandably, God is not speaking, because His Word says, “thou shall not commit adultery!” God’s Word, always confirms what comes from the mouth of his ministers.
It is always best to stay away from directing prophecy because God will always speak to the individual first. When operating in the prophetic, it is important to watch out for those who would try to control you through prophecy. It is also important, that you do not engage in this as well; as this is operating in witchcraft.
I remember my first prophetic words, were always those of edification, telling of God’s love for his people and also of encouragement to worship and praise God. The more I exercised the gift, and more I began to understand His Word; the keener will increase with practice or the exercising of the gift.
Why God Wants to Use You
3. God is looking for willing vessels
If you want to be used by God, study the Bible and ask God to give you His mind and heart. He will use you if you are willing. Even if you are unsure or afraid. We prophesy according to your understanding of the Word. The greater you knowledge of the Bible, the greater your ability to judge and deliver his Word.
The gifts are to be used in the local assembly to instruct and encourage its members. It can also be used outside the walls of the church to show unbelievers the love and mercy of God. It is promised that in the last days, His children would speak forth his message.
Acts 2: 17-18 NIV – In the last days, God says,I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women,I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
You will prophesy according to your understanding of is Word. The greater you knowledge of the Bible, the greater you ability to judge the prophetic Word before you speak it. Many believers have a prophetic word for the church, but because of fear and uncertainty have not given it. We prophesy according to the measure of our faith. Faith is not the absence of fear, but the act of stepping out in spite of fear. The good news is, you only need faith as a grain of a mustard seed to obey the Lord. As you step out, He will be stepping with you.
