Faith and Zeal – New Christians

Faith and zeal. will begin by saying that God loves us all and does not show favoritism.  Yet, there is something to be said about, the faith and zeal of new believers.  Young believers are the life of the Church.  Without them, the church would be boring and stale.  They love the Lord and are so excited about being saved.

If new believers are taught they have a purpose, they will go about finding the plan of God for their lives.  When encouraged early in their salvation to step out in faith to pray for the sick, minister to others, you will see great things done through them!

Matthew 19:14 – But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

I do not believe that this scripture only pertains to physical children, but can include baby Christians, and all those with child-like faith,  as well.

Don’t throw Water on Young Faith

Romans 10:1-4 – Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge.

This scripture is often used to dismiss the excitement and fever many have when they first come to the Lord.  They are young and so glad their sins are forgiven.  They discover God has a plan and purpose for them and they want to fulfill it.  It thinks some older saints are a little jealous when they see a fire that they no longer possess.  It is the responsibility of seasoned Christian, guide the newly saved in the right direction, but not to try to stamp out their fire.

My Faith and Zeal

As a young Christian, I was taught that God was the same yesterday, today and forever!  Hebrews 13: 8.   If God healed the sick, He has not changed and would heal today.  Armed with this fact, I believed that God could use me.  I would pray and cry out to the Lord to make me a vessel of honor and to help me to walk in holiness.

I had such a burden to see people come to Jesus Christ, I often went witnessing.  I often went door-to-door giving out gospel tracts and telling folks that God loved them.

On one occasion, I was knocking on doors and one woman actually invited into her home.   The woman spoke some English, and I spoke some Spanish.  Together we were able to communicate.

I had been noticing her young son, about 6 or 7 years old who appeared to be wearing hearing aids.   I asked the woman for permission to pray for her son, who was deaf, how could not hear across the room with his hearing aids.

She allowed me to pray for him.  I asked him to take his hearing aids out, laid my hand over his ears and commanded the spirit of deafness to come out of him, just like I saw someone do on TV.  I was a young Christian but believed the Word of God was true.  I believed God is a healer and deliver.

Galations 4:8 – But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.

He is a God of Miracles

I asked his mother to take him to the other side of the room and turn his back to me.   With his back turned, I began to ask him to repeat several words.  Without hesitation, he could hear me and repeat each word.  I did not know to what extend this young child could or could not hear, but his mother’s face said it all.

I looked at her, and tears were running down her face!  She was overcome by what God had done for her little boy.  To tell you the truth, I was as shocked as she was.  I had both child-like faith and zeal.  Though I did not have a lot of experienced, God honored my attempt to step out in faith.

In my best broken Spanish, I asked the little boy’s mother if she wanted to give her heart to the Lord, and I prayed with her to receive Christ.  That Sunday, the Mother, Father, Grandmother, and children came to church and gave their hearts to the Lord.

Titus 2:14 – who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

This thing we call Zeal

That is what is so great about new born Christians.  Nobody has told them yet, that they can’t, so they do!  God loves that zeal and that fire many young believers demonstrate!  All they know is that they love God and want to do everything He said we can do in the Bible.

I encourage church leaders, not to muzzle this upcoming army of the Lord.  They will be the leaders of tomorrow.  Don’t worry that they are filled with zeal and not that much else.   Do not discourage them but be examples for them to follow. They will learn because you will teach them, without pouring cold water on them.

I Peter 2 1-5 – Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. 4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, 5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
